| BACnet and BACnet IP - A clear descripton |
Preface: BACnet defines data communication services and protocols for computer equipment used for monitoring and control of HVAC&R and other building systems. It has been developed by ASHRAE together with manufacturers and users some years ago. Meanwhile there are many BACnet systems in use, but there could be more. Why or why not? The standard with an amount of more than 600 pages and many technical details is not easily understandable for the planners and we think, for manufacturers too. The attempt to understand BACnet usually starts with the three capital letters ‘B’, ‘A’, and ‘C’. They stand for Building, Automation, and Control. Making an attempt to start at the top, it ends probably at a perfect babel of tongue of expressions and abbreviations (short cuts) such as device, Device, property, interoperablity area, BIBB, PICS and so on. Who does not want to hold in its hand the thread of Ariadne in order to find out of the labyrinth of terms as once the Greek hero Theseus in order to find out of the labyrinth of Minotaurus. But the word ‘BACnet’ contains the three small letters ‘net’ standing for network. Starting there, at the bottom, it will be seen that BACnet is a well structured thing. BACnet defines only two of the well known seven layers of the OSI reference model for communication systems. For transport of data, BACnet uses well proven technologies such as LonTalk, MS/TP, or Ethernet together with protocols of the Internet protocol stack. From this point of view, BACnet is a selection of stacked communication protocols. Let’s get to know BACnet from bottom to top. At the end, there will be an interface to applications in the building automation and control technology, understandably and usefully for planners, installers and building managers. The extensive use of illustrations ought to make the problematic nature of networking more understandable at first glance. This book is supposed to be a comprehensive reference for practitioners who require a definitive guide to BACnet and BACnet/IP.
